According to the legend, Zagreb is named after Manduševac. There are several variants of interesting stories about Manduševac, girl Manda and Zagreb.

One of them is the story of a girl, Manda, who was near the water spring when a young knight was passing by on a horse. He was thirsty so he addressed the girl by saying, "Manda, dear, grab it!" (Croatian: “Mando, zagrabi!). So, both Manduševac and Zagreb got their names.

Another story says that while the water in Manduševac was drinkable, it was said that anyone who drinks water there would stay forever in Zagreb and fall in love with the city.

A third legend says that Manduša, the daughter of King Krešimir, was in love with Ban Dobromir. Manduša was known for her marvellous powers over water and finding potable water. Dobromir and Manduša were in love, but their love did not have a bright future. King Krešimir promised the hand of his daughter to the Hungarian prince Emerik. Manduša was unhappy with the arrangement and grieved for days. Her father took pity on her and allowed Dobromir to accompany her to her future husband. When they almost reached Emerik, they learned that he had died suddenly. They headed back home, but were very thirsty because of the great summer drought. There was nothing left but for Manduša to look for water. She looked for water with a branch, and when the branch shook in one place, Manduša exclaimed, "Scratch it here!" (Croatian: “Zagrebite!”) Because the water was clear, drinkable and clean, they decided to establish a city around this well. And so Zagreb came into being.

You should visit Zagreb Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, for its awe-inspiring Gothic architecture and historical significance. In 1093 when King Ladislaus I of Hungary (1040-1095) moved the bishop's chair from Sisak to Zagreb, he proclaimed the existing church as a cathedral. Construction on the cathedral started shortly after his death and was finished in 1217 and consecrated by king Andrew II of Hungary. The building was destroyed by the Mongols in 1242 but rebuilt by bishop Timothy (1263–1287) a few years later. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral, some of which are still intact. In the 17th century, a single fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.

Founded in 1787, Maksimir Park was the first large public park in South-Eastern Europe, and predates the majority of Europe's public park foundings. The park was opened in 1794 under the initiative of the man for whom it was named, Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac of Zagreb (1752–1827). If you've ever been to a souvenir shop Zagreb, or in a home of some local, it is almost certain you have bumped into these shiny little red hearts, adorably decorated, often with a little mirror in the middle.
Licitar hearts are an interesting part of the old Croatian heritage. Traditionally, they were used by young men to express their feelings towards some lucky girl on a Valentine's day. These little red hearts would represent a special sign of devotion and attention.
Mirror in the Licitar: In the past, on Valentine’s day or another occasion, boys would give girls licitar hearts and they would stand behind them, because it was believed that whomever you see in the mirror, is your soulmate. On the heart, there would also be a short love letter. 
Licitar hearts date back to Middle Ages when food crafts became widely popular. It is assumed that this trend has spread throughout Europe, and thus came to Croatia where it got its authentic look. At those times, they were sold at the fairs and gatherings connected to church festivals, which is a custom somewhat kept even today.

Around the year 1635 six thousand of soldiers and knights arrived in Paris as support to the French king Lui XIII. Among them were also some Croatians. The traditional uniform with tied and illustrated scarfs around the neck awakened some attention from the French courts. These scarfs were made from different kinds of materials, there were rough materials which were worn by the regular soldiers and the softer ones made of silk were worn by officers.
That style was called the Croatian elegant stile. It was still unknown then but around year 1650 it becomes a item of state which represented culture and elegance.
The young French king Lui XIV. (he was seven years old) started to wear Kravata around year 1646 and made the kravata the standard among the other nobleman. They soon called that kind of fashion la Croate (which means on the Croatian way).
The Kravata had a multiple functions:
It was protecting eyes from the dust while riding a horse. Also you could used it as a bandage, to stop bleeding or to cover the wounds and as sun protection and also as water filter.

Barbara Celjska (Barbara of Cilli) was a factual historic figure who lived in the 15th century, born in today is Czech Republic. She became a Hungarian-Croatian queen by marrying King Sigismund.
She was very beautiful, but also pretty abusive and deceitful toward others. During her rule, she allegedly spent time in the Medvedgrad Fortress on Mount Medvednica. This is why some consider her the real Black Queen.
Legend has it that The Black Queen lived a very decadent life. People tell stories of how she had numerous lovers in the absence of her husband while residing in Medvedgrad.
After she was fed up with them, she ordered the poor souls to be thrown over the walls and down the mountain!
Her favorite pet was none other than a black raven. It sat on her shoulder and attacked people if she gave the order.
When the Ottomans prepared to take Medvedgrad, none wished to come to aid The Black Queen, so she desperately sought help from the devil.
She made a deal with him promising control over Medvedgrad and her own body. He drove them away, but she did not keep her end of the deal, Enraged, he turned her into a snake and locked her in a chamber underground.
People believe she still slithers somewhere, guarding her treasure in the hidden corridors which connect Medvedgrad with Zagreb.

The Legend of the cruel Black Queen

In Bundek Park citizens can enjoy nature, numerous outdoor activities, barbecuing, sunbathing, and fishing.
The lake can be accessed by disabled people via a ramp. The Small Lake remains a habitat for numerous plant and wildlife species. The area around the lake serves as a leisure park, and holds 10 barbecue areas (concrete barbecues with benches and tables), which can be used free of charge. Around the lake, there is a 1650-meter-long bicycle and roller-skating track, a walking path, and three playgrounds, one for children under 12, one for children over 12, and one for children with special needs.

In the eastern part of the park, there are two volleyball and handball sand courts. On the western part of the lake, there is a water stage which can hold around 2500 spectators for numerous cultural events. During the summer, there are numerous cultural, entertainment, sports, and recreational events.

Grič Tunnel is a part of mysterious Zagreb tunnel network. Today it is transformed into a tourist attraction and hosting temporary exhibition and events.
The tunnel consists of a central hall, which is connected by two passageways to Mesnička Street in the west and Stjepan Radić Street in the east, and four passageways extending to the south. It was built during World War II by the Ustaše government to serve both as a bomb shelter and a promenade

Modern Gallery (Croatian: Moderna galerija; since 2021 the National Museum of Modern Art, Nacionalni muzej moderne umjetnosti) is a museum in Zagreb, Croatia that holds the most important and comprehensive collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings by 19th and 20th century Croatian artists. The collection numbers around 10,000 works of art, housed since 1934 in the historic Vranyczany Palace in the centre of Zagreb, overlooking the Zrinjevac Park.

National Museum of Modern Art

Manduševac is the most famous fountain in Zagreb. It is located on Ban Josip Jelačić Square and you can see it on the county's coat of arms as well. The fountain is a favorite gathering place for tourists, but also one of the symbols of the city of Zagreb. Historically, the spring of water at the site has been around since ancient times. It is located in the area of the former market place (Harmica) under the walls of the old town.

Just 20 minutes from Zagreb, on the southern slope of Medvednica, at the top of the hill Mali Plazur, nests a picturesque medieval castle which has been watching over Zagreb for eight centuries.
It was built in 1254, after the catastrophic invasion of Tatars who had raided and devastated this area.
n its history it changed many lords, who won or lost it through marriage, purchase and sale, intrigue or even plotting. 
Even today the scary stories about the countess Barbara of Celje – the ill famed Black Queen – circulate about the villages at the foot of the mountain.
Medvedgrad was abandoned in 1590, after the fortress was devastated by a terrible earthquake. 
Nowadays the visitors of Medvedgrad can explore this ancient castle on their own or with a guide.
